Rarely do we see restaurants in the city innovating and trying something different once in a while. That way, The Irish House is different though, they have something new and exciting happening every two months or so.
Take for instance their newly crafted menu rightly titled Pairs To Spare—a specially curated beer and BBQ pairing (on till the 25th of June). This menu brings together eight different types of barbeques (four vegetarian and four non-vegetarian) paired with the Bira White and Bira Blonde. Interestingly, the food is not only paired with these brews but cooked in it too!
We were lucky enough to review the menu and this is what we thought of it.
We started with the White Ale And Honey Glazed Veggie Skewers With A Hint Of Arabica Coffee served with steakhouse-style sweet potato chips. One bite and we knew the vegetables were crunchy. We could get a charred aftertaste, maybe because of the infused coffee and the beer. The dish was paired with a Bira91 White—a refreshing wheat beer, low in bitterness, with a hint of spicy citrus and a soft finish, it complimented the dish perfectly.
Next was the Blond Lager Glazed Mushrooms And Tubers On Skewers served with crispy garlic fries and was paired with a Bira91 Blonde—a flavourful lager, rich in colour extra malty and high hopped with a delicate aroma. The barbeque came on top of a bed of crispy garlic fries, interesting plating we thought. Further, the mushrooms, the carrots, and the tapioca chunks on the skewer had a bite to them and the mushrooms had a hint of the lager in which it was cooked.
The Blonde Lager Glazed Carved Smoked Chicken Skewers served with steakhouse-style sweet potato chips, on the other hand, was mild on our palate and the vegetables retained its texture and the chicken bits was cooked through, but not well done, which we liked. This was paired with a Bira91 Blonde.
Then came the Smoked Sausages On Skewers With A White Ale And Caramelised Garlic Sauce served with classic crispy fries paired with a Bira91 White. The smoked sausages were not chewy and the garlic sauce was mild. The garlic fries and the paired beer is all you need to get through a hot summer day.
One of the sort after dishes on the menu was the Blonde Lager And Honey Glazed Black Pepper Crusted Chicken Drumsticks served with steakhouse-style sweet potato chips. The sauce which coated the medium ‘rareish’ chicken legs added a bittersweet aftertaste, which was well-balanced by the Bira91 Blonde. Beer lovers with dig this one for sure!
If you want to try something deliciously different then we reckon you sample the Cinnamon Grilled Fish With A Mint And White Ale Sauce served with crispy garlic fries. At first, we were like, “Cinnamon on to a grilled fish item?” But we were wrong about the spice choice in the dish once we dug in. The fish filet was medium rare and almost tasted like a cinnamon bun! You have to try it to understand what this dish really is, and then it was paired with the Bira91 White, whose soft undertones balanced the whole pairing perfectly.
The menu is different and serves a purpose. This pairing will give you an overview of how beer can be paired with specific items and cooked in it too.
